A dynamic contact list allows you to upload custom fields to use in conjunction with Web SMS to personalise your messages.

To get started, you will need a dynamic contact list to upload in either CSV or Excel file. You should have only one sheet and the columns should be named in row 1. An example would be something like this:

Don’t forget, you can upload your numbers in any format, i.e. 447, +447, 07 or even without the leading 0 as the portal will still recognise it as a UK mobile. If you are sending internationally, the same would apply but with the relevant country code.

Save your contact list to your PC so that you can upload it to the portal later.

To upload your list, head to the Contact Lists section here.

Click on the “Create New Contact List” button to create a new list.

Once here, you can name your contact list. This is for your reference only and your recipients won’t be able to see it. You can include a description but it is not required.

Don’t forget to set your default country code if sending internationally. If you would like to enable any international routes, please get in touch with your Account Manager.

Once you have clicked next, select “Upload File” 

Select your file from your PC. Unlike uploading a static list, don’t select the “file has no column titles” box. You might want to allow duplicates if the custom fields are different, if you do please tick the box.

When you click next, you might see a loading bar. Please wait to be redirected to the next step where you can match your columns to a column title.

The numbers column will be auto-matched and as such will appear green. Your custom fields need to be matched and will show in red.

To match them, select an option from the dropdown. For example, here we have upload first names, so I have selected “First Name” from the drop down.

Complete this step for each of your custom fields. If there is a field you don’t want to upload, tick the “skip” box.

If any of the drop down options do not match what is in your column, you can select “+Add New” from the dropdown and create your own title.

When you have matched all of your columns, click “Finish”

Depending on the size of the list, it may take some time to upload. You will be returned to the contact list overview page where you can see the processing. You can navigate away from this page whilst the list is upload if you need to.

Once it has finished processing, you can see that the list status is “Active”. Click on the green “i” to see list info such as how many invalid numbers, duplicate numbers and blacklisted numbers there are.
